Experience
Thomas Morel is born in Besançon, France.

After graduating with a scientific degree in physics and chemistry, he went on to study mechanical and vibration engineering. Having worked with wood since childhood and played the guitar, the choice of a career in lutherie appeared to be the best way to harmoniously combine all these skills and aptitudes with an artistic dimension.
In 2012, he graduated from the IPIALL Antonio Stradivari International School in Cremona, where he studied with Maestri A.Sperzaga, A.Voltini, C.Amighetti, M.Negroni, D.Scolari, M.Ardoli, V.Zambelli et A.Ortona.
This was followed in Lyon by a period of training in set-up editing at Claude Macabrey's workshop.
To broaden his horizons and perfect his mastery of construction techniques, he met and exchanged with colleagues in Cremona, Genoa and Bologna, including D.Sora, L.Salvadori, A.Giordano, B.Garnier, B.Friedmann, G.Arré, R.Regazzi.
He will open his activity in 2019, dedicated to making instruments for the quartet.

Methodology
When it comes to the design and layout of the models, two working philosophies can be followed: either auteur inspiration with a symmetrical model for a modern finish with full varnish or moderate patina, or replication following the original instrument. We follow the characteristics in detail, right down to the traces of tools used in the making of the instrument, just like those found on the old instruments of the great classical masters, giving a glimpse of the construction methods and the authenticity of entirely hand-made craftsmanship.
In all cases, attention is paid to the geometrical characteristics of the model's outline using traditional tracing techniques, and to its arching and tuning, with the aim of obtaining the best possible results according to the given starting materials. The aim is to achieve the best possible characteristics in terms of acoustics, timbre, projection and balance, while respecting the style of the old Italian masters.
To achieve this, we draw inspiration from the precepts set out in the various publications on acoustic research by J.Curtin, M.Schleske, E.Jansson, N.Harris, O.E.Rodgers, G.Stoppani.
Professional training is constantly evolving, in terms of acoustics and chemistry applied to lutherie, notably through workshops at Fertans on the manufacture of its own varnishes.

Distinctions
He participated at the XIIth ANLAI International Violinmaking Competition in Pisogne in 2021, where he was awarded Silver Medal and 2nd Prize in the Professional category for instruments made in antique copies.
